Ryan Kahn's Top 5 Tips to Get Hired out of College

Ryan Kahn, Career Coach with Dream Careers and featured recruiter on the docu-series MTV Hired, has advised thousands of job seekers on how to get hired at the most competitive companies. Here are Ryan's top 5 Tips to get hired out of college.

  1. Experience. It's the ultimate career catch 22. How do you gain experience without a job, and how do you get a job without experience? INTERNSHIPS! Not just one, but multiple internships! 85% of ... getting hired out of the internship pool. In this economy, employers can't afford to take a risk on an employee. So where do they turn to? Candidates that have proven to be successful in their organization. Professional maturity.
  2. Network. Now that you are graduating, it's time to start acting like a professional. Join industry groups, start attending networking events, and start to seek mentors to help propel your career. Take those opportunities to begin marketing yourself and your abilities. You never know who can connect you with your next employer.
  3. Know your Strengths. Understand what type of role you are most interested in, and know what type of position you will excel at. If you don't know what that is, read job descriptions that require 5-10 years of experience at your ideal companies. Could you see yourself enjoying that role? Would you be good in that role? When the answer is yes to both, then start working your way up the totem pole by applying for the entry-level position in that department.
  4. Start Early. Don't wait until you graduate to start looking for jobs. Days where employers hire 5-6 months before graduation are long gone (with the exception of the biggest and most competitive positions). Do your research and make a top 10 list. Apply for open positions, but try to network your way into a more personal application submission. Start with alumni from your school, friends, family or a social media site.
  5. Call and Follow up. Don't be afraid to follow up with hiring managers. Often job seekers fail to follow up because they are afraid of rejection or being told no. Be persistent and make personal connections, as it may land you your dream career.

These are just a few resume tips that will help you get hired. Check back for more advice on my web-cast at http://www.SummerInternships.com/ryan-kahn or tune in to MTV's Hired weeknight's to hear first hand advice for job seekers.
